Can all disciplines go global?

Living in New York City, we feel that everything seems to have one or more links to the rest of the world. It also seems natural to consider Columbia University's curriculum deeply embedded in a global context. Yet can all disciplines, majors or minors, go global? Could they be taught everywhere in the world in the same way? Why do we need to globalize our subjects? Or why shouldn't we globalize some disciplines? Please feel free to share your ideas, experiences, and visions.

In our globalized world, we can't ignore the impact of one place, action, or idea on others around the world. It is for this reason that our studies need to go global. A complete analysis of any topic (whether it be art, biology, or political science) must consider everything that it affects. Ignoring a topic's global implications would simply be academically lazy.

Are there fields without global implications? Perhaps, but there are far fewer than one might initially imagine.
